The United States District Court, District of Colorado, declined to issue a temporary restraining order prohibiting the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Colorado Parks and Wildlife CPW) from reintroducing wolves in Colorado.
A last-ditch legal effort by Gunnison area ranchers had asked for a stay of the reintroduction on the grounds that CPW had not adequately studied the impacts on livestock and ranching. But over the past three years, extensive meetings have been held with constituencies to mitigate the impacts on farming and ranching.
With this decision, Colorado Parks and Wildlife teams will move forward with implementing the approved Gray Wolf Restoration and Management Plan, in accordance with the will of Colorado voters, perhaps as early as next week.
Colorado votes approved the reintroduction of wolves into the Colorado ecosystem in 2020. They gave CPW three years to begin reintroduction of the gray wolf back into Colorado. That timeline is up December 31, 2023.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife has announced that it will not comment further on ongoing litigation.
