As the first part of the 2023-24 basketball schedule winds down, the two Concord University basketball head coaches reviewed the season to date at a press conference, on Tuesday.
Men’s coach Todd May talking about his team which is 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the last three games, said, “I’m proud of our hard work. We were able to get the jump on Salem and kept our play going throughout the game; then came back to play a tough game with Notre Dame which we won in overtime.”
The keys to the season as a whole, he added, was a more consistent defensive effort by the team. He attributed much of the progress to assistant coach Trent Howard.
“Coach Howard, who does our scouting, has done a great job working on our defenses. The team has bought into our concepts”, May said.
Defense and rebounding, he commented, enabled the team to get into their offense, which involves a series of ball screens , more easily.
“We held Notre Dame to 42 percent shooting on Saturday,” he said.
As for Frostburg State, which will be the last game of the 2023 fall semester, he said, “They have struggled a bit early with a new coach and system but they will be a challenge to our focus, especially since our players are going through their exams.”
Women’s coach Tesla Southcott also cited exams as a challenge to her team’s focus, especially since Frostburg has a veteran head coach and a big scorer who can present their own challenges.
“For us to play well we have to stay within a team effort,” she said.
While the Notre Dame game was disappointing , Southcott said the 2-1 recent stretch showed the team’s ability to play either perimeter ball or interior play along with good defense.
