Concord man slain in Pleasant Hill sports bar parking-lot shooting

The shooting, Pleasant Hill’s first homicide of the year, happened during a dispute between two groups early Monday outside a sports bar, police said

PLEASANT HILL — A dispute between two groups of people led to the fatal shooting of a 37-year-old Concord man early Monday in a parking lot outside a sports bar, authorities said.

The Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office coroner’s division identified the man Monday afternoon as Oscar Laredo Arellano. No arrests were announced.

Police said they responded about 1:12 a.m. Monday to 911 calls of a shooting with a victim down in a parking lot at 1938 Contra Costa Blvd. A shopping center there contains multiple businesses, including a supermarket; most were closed at the time of the shooting, which took place in an area of the parking lot near Farrington’s Bar.

Laredo Arellano was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said the suspected shooter apparently fled in a vehicle before officers responded.

The investigation determined the shooting occurred after a dispute started between two groups of people that started inside the bar and carried over to the parking lot, Pleasant Hill police Chief Scott Vermillion said. Authorities have not confirmed the nature of the dispute.

The victim was involved in a pushing match with another person before he was shot, Vermillion said. It was not clear if the other person in the shoving match was the person who fired the fatal shot or shots.

The killing is the first homicide in Pleasant Hill this year, authorities said. The last homicide inside city limits was in August 2021.

Any witnesses to the shooting or anyone with information is asked to contact the Pleasant Hill Police Department, 925-288-4600.
