Concord Celebrates Veterans

U.S. Rep. Rudy Yakym visited Concord High School on Friday to join them in honoring veterans.

The school hosted a Veterans Day convocation ahead of the national day celebrating those who have served the armed forces, even bringing in family members of students who are veterans and offering them special distinctions.

“Our veterans are living monuments of sacrifice, bravery, courage, valor and patriotism,” Yakym told students. “Our veterans represent the very best of the United States of America and they are quite literally in a class of their own.”

Concord High School parent liaison Noemi Chacon also spoke as a veteran about her time serving in the Navy.

“Being in the military was never a dream of mine,” she said. “In fact, I have never considered it.”

Her younger brother left for service after graduation and when she saw what the military could offer, she began to consider it, eventually joining the Navy. She left just two weeks after her brother. She traveled the Pacific, met her husband while stationed in San Diego, and had their first child while on base duty.

“I respect the parents currently serving, putting their country before everything,” she said. “I’m proud to say I have answered the call that only a few are able to answer.”

Veterans honored on site were George Perez, Cody Ward, Larry Glanders, Terry Vander Reyden, William Barber, Clifford McMichael, Travis Andrews, Travis Jones, Danny Taylor, Trish Phillips, Andrew Denaway, and Frankie Quier Jr.

The school also honored three students who are preparing to enter the armed forces.
